How the Air Force Academy is impacted by the government shutdown

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — While some aspects of the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) continue as normal during the government shutdown, other activities will be unavailable, including public shows at the planetarium.

USAFA posted a full breakdown of affected activities and facilities on its website to provide clarity to visitors, staff, and cadets. On the public-facing side, the visitor center will not be staffed, though visitors can still walk through exhibits and take a map to embark on a self-guided tour. The Fanatics team store remains open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Planetarium will cancel all public shows; however, those that have been scheduled for STEM visits from schools and centers will continue as planned.

The Academy’s social media platforms and website will only be updated in the event of an emergency, USAFA said.

Impacts to cadet services in 10 Air Base Wing include the closure of the Community Center Library, though medical, firefighting, food court, barber, laundry, and fitness facilities are open.

As for Academy athletics, fitness and testing as well as intramurals will pause during the shutdown. Physical education classes will continue as scheduled with military instructors teaching increased number of classes. Air Force Academy home and away intercollegiate athletic events will continue. Athletic Facilities will remain open for cadet use only.
