(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 50-pound pitbull saved a 2-pound kitten’s eyesight after donating liquid gold.
Yahana, a six-week-old kitten, was brought to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) with a severe upper respiratory infection, leaving both her eyes with discharge. Upon arrival at HSPPR, she was showing signs of corneal ulcer and veterinaries feared she might lose one or both of her eyes.
Veterinarians treated Yahana’s cold first, then moved over to attempt to save her eyes. They decided to try an innovative approach — using the blood from a healthy dog to make a healing eye serum.
Hand-selected by the team, Alya, a 4-year-old pitbull, was picked due to her loving nature. The 50-pound pittie did not mind the blood draws and seemed to enjoy helping.
According to HSPPR, thanks to Alya’s help Yahana will likely keep both eyes. As for Alya, she received her happily ever after during the last weekend of June, when she was adopted.
