Inmate in critical condition after found unconcious in cell

Editor’s Note: El Paso County Sheriff’s Office corrected the time the inmate was found, when first responders arrived, and when he was transferred to the hospital.

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) reported they found a man unresponsive inside his cell in El Paso County Jail on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 11.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., deputies found a man unresponsive inside his cell. Deputies and medical staff began lifesaving measures until American Medical Response and the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived and assumed medical care at around 8:30 p.m.

According to EPSO, evidence found during a search of the cell suggests the inmate attempted to take his own life.

He was transferred to a hospital at 9:22 p.m. and is currently in critical condition.

Sheriff Roybal has ordered an in-depth investigation. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division will assume the investigation.
