Interim county coroner chosen by the Board of Pueblo County Commissioners

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — The Board of Pueblo County Commissioners (BOCC) has chosen an interim Pueblo County Coroner during a BOCC meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

After 16 applications and five formal interviews, the BOCC chose Dr. Gregory Grahek to serve as the interim Pueblo County Coroner. Dr. Grahek will serve as the county coroner until the next official vote in the fall of 2026.

A key point of contention during the meeting was Dr. Grahek’s knowledge regarding death and funeral services. Namely, Dr. Grahek currently works as a nurse practitioner, with no formal experience with death services.

Commissioner Miles Lucero was especially skeptical of the choice of Dr. Grahek, stating, “I think it is very important for this community to know that we’re not only appointing a coroner with no direct experience, we are appointing a coroner who is not willing to commit 100% of his professional career to this position.”

Commissioner Paula McPheeters disagreed, saying that while those assertions can be given to Dr. Grahek, he can either accept or decline the position, then adjustments could be made if necessary.

From here, Dr. Grahek will need to have his fingerprints taken by the Clerk and Recorder’s Office, a standard background check, then an official meeting with the BOCC to officially accept the position and swear under oath.
