Investigators determine cause of Marksheffel fire

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The cause of the grass fire that broke out on Sunday, March 10 at Marksheffel and Drennan Roads has been determined, according to Ashley Franco, Public Information Officer for the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD).

CSFD Fire Investigators have determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and most likely started by sparks from a vehicle dragging chains.


UPDATE: Fire near Marksheffel and Drennan roads is 640 acres and 90% contained

CSFD was originally dispatched around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday when community members reported seeing three to four small fires in the area. When crews arrived, they reported a large fire spreading quickly, likely a combination of the smaller fires connecting.

Additional crews were requested, and 40 CSFD personnel, along with fire crews from multiple nearby departments worked throughout the evening to control the fire and keep it contained. As of Monday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m. the fire had burned 640 acres and was 90% contained. One CSFD brush truck remained at the scene to patrol for hotspots, and they are confident that the containment line will hold.

No evacuations were necessary during the fire, and no injuries were reported. One abandoned structure was lost.
