Is it too cold to wear shorts in winter?

(COLORADO) — It’s a debate that’s been going on between kids and parents for quite some time, but the question remains: Is it actually okay for your kids to wear shorts in winter?

Experts say that in some cases, the answer is yes.

Wearing shorts in temperatures below 40 degrees can leave anyone vulnerable to frostbite or hypothermia. In fact, younger children are most at risk because they don’t yet have the developmental skills to react to being too cold. The only difference is when children are in their teen years. If the teenager is not going to be out in the cold for an extended period of time, it is best to just pick your battles and let them wear the shorts.

If you suspect your child has hypothermia, here are the signs:

Confusion

Shivering

Difficulty speaking

Shivering

Stiff muscles.

Consult your local doctor if you have questions or suspect frostbite or hypothermia in your child.
