Is your neighborhood safe? Here’s an online tool to find out

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — If you’re moving to a new area in Colorado Springs and are interested in learning more about a particular neighborhood after reading reviews online, there’s an online tool that can help you make your decision.

On the City of Colorado Springs website, there’s a section called ‘Your Neighborhood,’ which includes several links to helpful information about police activity throughout the city in addition to information on sex offenders in the area.

To view reported crimes and calls for service in a specific area, users can simply navigate to the ‘Police Activities’ section. They’ll then be directed to the ‘My Neighborhood Update’ page, where users will be taken to a map of the U.S. and can input an address in the search bar to locate a particular area.

After hitting search, several items and information will appear on the page. “Data is based on calls for police service. A call for police service may or may not result in a case report and further investigation,” according to the website. “The data points are called ‘events’ because they are calls for service, and may not involve a crime.”

Users can look through a list of categories of events in an area including; property, violent incidents, traffic, proactive policing, noise, and disorder, just to name a few. If people want to look at total events in an area spanning longer than 30 days, they can easily input specific dates using the map.

Should people want to look further into a certain event that happened, the page also lists out every event and includes information such as; the type of event, location of call, when the report was recieved and how many cars responded.

Once users click on an event, it will be highlighted in yellow, and if they want more information, they can scroll back up to the map which lists additional event details including the agency that responded, a contact number, should someone want to reach out for more details, and a police event number.
