(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) is warning the community of another scam tricking victims into sending money.
EPSO says the scam involves jury duty. Scammers will call claiming to be law enforcement or the court and say that you have missed jury duty and now there is a warrant out for your arrest.
These scammers may sound legitimate, and may even tell you to come to the Sheriff’s Office to meet someone, but EPSO says it is a trap. “They’re only trying to get you to leave your home so they can scare you into sending money,” EPSO wrote.
Per EPSO, scammers may mention a “signature verification” process, which is a fake legal procedure designed to make the scam appear legitimate.
“In reality, it’s just a tactic to get you to comply with their demands, which usually involve paying a fine or handing over sensitive information,” EPSO added.
EPSO said law enforcement will never call to demand payment for a warrant or ask you to pay in gift cards, Bitcoin, or wire transfers. A real deputy will not threaten arrest over the phone or pressure you to act quickly.
Individuals who receive this type of call are encouraged to hang up immediately or call local law enforcement.
