Kula labeled habitual offender, could face ‘harsher’ sentence

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The second phase of the trial of Justin Kula, the man who was found guilty of hitting and killing Pueblo Parole Officer Christine Guerin Sandoval in September 2023, continued on Thursday, Feb. 20 after he was found guilty of four charges on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Kula was accused of hitting two officers and killing one during a welfare check. On Wednesday, he was found guilty on four charges:

Failure to Fulfill Duties after Involvement in a Vehicular Incident

Manslaughter

Third Degree Assault

Vehicular Homicide


Man accused of killing parole officer found guilty

On Thursday, Kula’s trial continued, this time covering Habitual Criminal charges. During the trial, the jury looked over three previous offenses Kula had been found guilty of, including an Attempt to Commit Extorsion and Felony Attempted Assault on a Peace Officer.

The jury did find cause to add the three Habitual Criminal charges, for counts four, five, and six, which could lead to a harsher prison sentence.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 2, at 3 p.m.
