Lawmakers discuss food insecurity at Care and Share

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — State lawmakers and local leaders gathered at the Care and Share Food Bank distribution center in Pueblo to tour the facility and discuss the impact food banks like Care and Share have on food insecurity in our community.

Nate Springer, the President and CEO of Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado said the purpose of the tour was to get state legislators in the door to see what Care and Share is doing, so they can partner with them to make sure the food bank has thought of everything to get food in the door.

“Between July of 2023 and June of 2024, we put 25.2 million pounds of food out the door at our three distribution centers. We have a distribution center in Colorado Springs, the one we’re at here in Pueblo, and then one in Alamosa, said Springer. “But 25 million pounds of food is the equivalent to about 21 million meals. So, you know, that doesn’t solve hunger in the state of Colorado, but that sure takes a big bite out of it.”

Care and Share works to gather and sort food from multiple sources, distributing to a network of nearly 300 partners in 29 counties across Southern Colorado.
