Local author offers insight into understanding teen girls

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Chelsey Goodan, author of “UNDERESTIMATED: The Wisdom and Power of Teenage Girls” is holding a book event this Saturday, March 16, at Hooked on Books in downtown Colorado Springs. Goodan is a graduate of Cheyenne Mountain High School and is on a nationwide book tour promoting her book that has gained the attention of Oprah’s Book Club, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, and the TODAY show.

“My experience, after 16 years of working with them, is that they (girls) are wildly underestimated, they want to be a part of the conversation, they want to feel heard, they want to feel understood and instead we put a lot of stereotypes on them: they’re mean, they’re dramatic, they’re crazy,” Goodan said. “We’re not helping them step into their voice or their power and their best selves.”

Goodan is a tutor and teen mentor who has worked with hundreds of girls and she said this book gives them the microphone and also gives adults the tools to open up the conversation with teenage girls about a variety of hot-button issues, from sexuality to social media, to self-doubt and power.

“I really offer practical tools in here for parents to better connect with, and understand, their daughter and it has a lot to do with helping her feel heard first,” Goodan said.

Goodan will be joined in the conversation by her high school drama teacher Jodi Papproth, who supported her as a teenage girl.

“She was the non-parent adult in my life during my teenage years that helped me feel heard and met me for exactly who I was, embraced me for who I was, and let me be my authentic self,” Goodan said.

The book event is taking place at 12 E. Bijou Street from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Copies of her book will be available for purchase. Follow Goodan on social media @ChelseyGoodan and find more information at her website above.
