Local business strikes big with torpedo bat surge

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — In a garage in Colorado Springs, there’s a man making baseball bats. Trevor Goldman has been making and selling them since he was a teenager.

Goldman decided what he wanted to do when he was watching an episode of “How It’s Made” with his dad, and the episode happened to feature baseball bats.

“They were up at Sam Bat making one of Barry Bonds’s bats, and I turned to my dad and said ‘Dad, I want to learn how to make my own bats,” Goldman said.

He also founded the Berg Bat Company while he was in his teenage years, but didn’t start to make good until 2020.

Right now, business is booming like never before, as he currently has around 150 orders to complete, with the list growing each day. It’s because baseball players from Little League to college want to get their own torpedo bat.

“The craze is real right now,” Goldman said.

A torpedo bat is a custom-made bat designed to put more wood in the barrel of the bat in order to shift the sweet spot to a player’s preferred spot. The new bat has been the talk of baseball since the New York Yankees hit nine home runs in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, March 29.

Since then, there has been talk among fans and sports talk personalities about whether the bat should be allowed in baseball for the foreseeable future. Goldman says it’s still about the player and the swing.

“Aaron Judge isn’t going to be swinging the torpedo bat, but a guy like Anthony Volpi has found a lot of success with it,” Goldman said.

Goldberg has been fielding orders for torpedo bats from around the country, but they are not for pro players. That’s because Goldberg isn’t pro-certified to make official game bats for teams and players. He is allowed to make split-grip bats for players to practice with, as he recently worked with Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle to make his latest training bat.

Goldberg tells us he does want to make game official bats one day but adds that the process takes time. He hopes to be able to complete certification by 2027.
