(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A 35-year-old man was arrested after the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said he broke into a business, stole a car, and later crashed into a ditch on Monday, Feb. 17.
PCSO said on Monday at around 8:30 a.m., deputies were called to Turner Roofing located at 4100 West 8th Street off of Pueblo Boulevard for a report of a man who had broken into the business and taken several sets of car keys. The suspect took a 2024 Chevy Colorado truck belonging to the business. The truck had GPS and the business owner was able to track it and tell deputies where the truck was.
Deputies found the truck crashed in a water ditch north of Highway 96 near Lake Pueblo. Deputies found a man matching the description of the suspect walking in the area. The man was later identified as Steven M. Martinez.
When deputies asked Martinez to get on the ground he refused them, and deputies then used a taser. Martinez was taken into custody.
Martinez is facing charges of Second-Degree Burglary, Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Criminal Mischief, leaving the scene of an accident, and Reckless Driving.
“I would like to thank the business employees for partnering with us to help capture this suspect,” said Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero. “The vehicle was enabled with GPS and the business owner was able to track it and notify us of the location, which led [to] locating and arresting the suspect. We appreciate the community that helps us.”
