Man arrested for arson in connection to west side fire

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A man has been arrested on arson charges in connection to a fire that broke out during high fire danger on the west side of Colorado Springs on Thursday, March 13.

The fire was originally reported around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday in the area of Garden of the Gods Road and North 30th Street. The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said the quick-moving fire was burning in vegetation on the south side of Garden of the Gods Road, and three homes were threatened at the time of the fire.

The fire burned right up to the fence line of homes nearby, though firefighters worked hard to protect property and ultimately stopped the fire before it ever reached any structures. The fire burned 20 acres and saw 30th Street closed indefinitely while crews worked to mop up the fire.

According to an update from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), a 48-year-old man has been placed into custody on fourth degree arson charges in connection to the fire. CSPD said one of the 911 callers who reported the fire stated that they had possibly seen the person responsible for starting the fire leaving the area.

CSPD said once CSFD Engine 9 arrived on scene, firefighters discovered evidence of a potential crime and were able to preserve that evidence until fire investigators and CSPD officers arrived. While fire crews battled the fire, a point of origin was determined to be a makeshift campsite.

He has been booked into the El Paso County Jail on other unrelated felony and misdemeanor warrants, along with a new charge of felony arson and misdemeanor possession of narcotics.
