(FREMONT COUNTY, Colo.) — A man died on a tubing trip on the Arkansas River in Fremont County on Saturday, July 13, after falling from his tube and being discovered unresponsive by bystanders.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) rangers were notified around 11 a.m. on Saturday that a man was receiving CPR along the riverbank a few miles downstream of Portland, east of Florence. First responders from multiple agencies including Florence EMS, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, the Fremont County Coroner and CPW responded to the scene.

Rangers learned that a group of seven people on innertubes got into the river near the town of Portland and planned on floating to their campsite on private land a few miles downstream. While tubing, CPW said the group got separated and one person, a man in his thirties, was reported to have fallen from his tube and into the water.
CPW said a bystander who was fishing nearby saw the man unresponsive in the river and was able to bring him ashore and begin CPR, with the help of other bystanders.
Unfortunately, resuscitation efforts failed, and the man was pronounced dead on scene by Fremont County medical staff. CPW said no personal flotation device was found near the man at the time of the incident.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,” said Tom Waters, AHRA park manager.
The man’s body was turned over to the Fremont County Coroner to determine the official cause of death, and for identification.
