May rain significantly improves drought situation

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — A lot of storms have shown up in the forecast lately, and if you aren’t a fan of the rain, you might be relieved to know it’s at least done us a lot of good.

At the beginning of April, the drought monitor for Colorado showed dry conditions for most of the state. This is concerning because April 1 is considered the peak of snowpack season for the state, and if it is dry, it indicates deficits in the water supply.

At the start of May, the drought actually increased, especially for places like the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and the Arkansas River Valley. However, the drought monitor showed by the end of May that the drought conditions practically disappeared in the Arkansas River Valley and receded in the Eastern Plains and Higher terrain.

This is great news for our water supply, especially if it remains this way.
