Meet Olive, the newest baby at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZoo) gave FOX21 an up close and personal experience with Olive, the newest addition to the Hoffman’s Two-Toed Sloth family at the zoo.

Olive lives with her mom, Aysan, inside the Scutes Family Garden on the zoo’s grounds.

Aysan, with Olive on her stomach, slowly makes her way down branches, guided by a large blue and white ball attached to a stick. “Part of the reason that it (the ball) is so big and that it is two different colors, is that it helps her be able to see it better,” said Amber Callen-Ward, a keeper with CMZoo. “With her version, they don’t see in high contrast, so we need two very different colors for them to be able to pick it up. “

The sloth moves at a sloth’s pace – slow, but eventually, Olive and Aysan arrive at Amber who feeds them apples and bits of lettuce. Both have a sweet tooth – preferring apples. Neither likes kale.

Sloths prefer to sleep throughout the day and are more active at night, but when treats are offered, sloths will venture down. At around nine months to a year, Olive will start to slowly venture away from her mom.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Annual Run to the Shrine is just months away and the event fills up fast but offers a unique way to experience the zoo.
