Mt. Carmel needs community support during shutdown

As the government shutdown enters its second week, military members and their supporting resources are feeling the strain, with local organizations stepping up to provide aid.

Mount Carmel Veterans Service Center, a non-profit organization, has been actively supporting service members in Southern Colorado through various initiatives, including a recent food drive. Despite their grants not being frozen, the individuals they support are not receiving paychecks, prompting an increased need for assistance, which the center needs community support to keep up with.

“We do a bi-weekly food distro with Care and Share and there was almost double the people there,” said Robert McLaughlin, executive director of Mount Carmel Veterans Service Center. “So that’s an indicator that people need right now.”

Mount Carmel offers a range of services to veterans, including job assistance and help with rent. The organization also operates a pantry that requires community support to restock.

“Anything that’s nonperishable will support somebody,” McLaughlin emphasized, highlighting the need for donations.

McLaughlin noted that fiscal support is crucial, especially for rent assistance, as the organization strives to meet the growing demand for help.

Volunteers are also needed for upcoming events, such as the homeless stand down at Weidner Field on October 21, where additional hands can make a significant difference.

With the holiday season approaching, Mount Carmel anticipates continued high demand for their services. “Normally, if you’re having problems, they’re escalated during the holiday season,” McLaughlin explained.

As the shutdown persists, Mount Carmel Veterans Service Center continues to call on the community for support, ensuring that no service member is left behind during these challenging times. to get involved with helping you can go to their website or call (719) 772-7000
