(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Jireh African Market, owned by Gina Meya, is bringing unique African flavors to the Pikes Peak Region in Southern Colorado.
Located in Security-Widefield, the market offers a variety of African foods that are hard to find in regular supermarkets, such as goat skin, bitter cola, and ox tail seasoning.
“When we moved here, we could not find our food,” said Meya, owner of Jireh African Market.
Meya immigrated to America from the Congo in 2013 and noticed a gap in the availability of African cuisine in the Pikes Peak Region.
Two months ago, she decided to fill this need by opening her own market, offering staples from her home country.
“Fufu, cassava leaves, dry fish,” Meya lists some of the items available at her store. Fufu, a dish with deep roots in African culture, is currently a viral trend but has been a staple since the time of ancestors.
Meya emphasizes the health benefits of her products, noting that they are organic and free from chemicals. “Our food preserves us from a lot of sickness and disease,” she explained.
For those unfamiliar with the ingredients, Meya offers guidance on how to prepare dishes, ensuring customers can recreate the flavors at home.
“I’m teaching them, I’m showing them how to make a dish,” she said.
Meya’s mission extends beyond African cuisine, as she also stocks items from England and Italy, aiming to provide a taste of home for everyone.
Jireh African Market is located at 358 Main Street, and more information can be found at the link above.
