(COLORADO) — New laws take effect Jan.1, with the start of the new year. There are a lot of them, but we narrowed it down to a few that will probably impact your everyday life.
The new laws cover issues ranging from car seats to gun storage, but a big one is the ban on holding a cell phone while driving.
Starting Jan. 1, people can be fined for picking up their phone while behind the wheel. For a first-time offense, drivers face a $75 fine and two license suspension points. Although the penalty increases based on the number of times someone is caught holding their phone while driving within two years.
“Distracted driving increases your crash risk by two to six times. We see about 50 to 60 deaths every single year in Colorado because of distracted drivers. This law really strengthens and builds upon a previous law in Colorado that just bans texting and driving,” said Sam Cole, a CDOT Traffic Safety Manager.
On a separate note, gun owners can now be fined up to $500 for not properly locking and concealing a gun in an unattended car.
Last but not least, now is a good time to review the new rules for kids in cars. Simply put, your child is now required to stay in the backseat, booster seat, or car seat, longer than we originally thought they should.
“Each child can stay in the prior stage until they reach the maximum height or weight limit. Then, children have to be in at least a booster or a type of car seat until they’re nine years old. Additionally, they have to be in the rear seat of a vehicle, if available, until nine,” said Amanda Abramczyk-Thill, the Injury Prevention and Outreach Specialist for Children’s Hospital.
