Not all left lanes are passing lanes

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Is the left lane always for passing? Some may bump into that one driver who is “hogging” the road, while others may experience the driver who is speeding the whole way through in the left lane.

According to a Colorado State Patrol (CSP) spokesperson, there is a left lane law that applies to certain roads, not all that have more than one lane in each direction. According to CSP, a person cannot drive a car in the passing lane if the speed limit is 65 mph or more unless that person is passing other cars that are in a nonpassing lane or turning left.

Colorado law states that a”passing lane” is the farthest to the left lane if there are two or more adjacent lanes of traffic moving. If the left lane is restricted, the passing lane shall be the lane immediately to the right of it.

This law only applies to Colorado highways with speed limits of 65 mph or above.

Those who violate the law are committing a class A traffic violation, which can result in fines that range between $15-$100, a point penalty, or license suspension if one does not pay the fines associated with a class A violation.
