(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Old Colorado City Historical Society & History Center in Colorado Springs is facing over $50,000 in rain damage after heavy storms hit the Pikes Peak region last month.
The museum experienced significant damage due to more than 3.5 inches of rain in August, which led to flooding in the basement, damaging the foundation and artifacts.
“We have to preserve it,” said Leo Knudson, maintenance manager at the Old Colorado City Historical Society & History Center.
“It’s our history. It’s… where we came from, how we developed. And this building is part of it,” Knudson emphasized.
The museum is not alone in dealing with the aftermath of the storms. Other local establishments, such as Chapel Hills and Citadel Malls, as well as Monument Town Hall, have also reported water damage.
Calvin Turner, owner of Calvin Turner Roofing, noted that the recent rains have led to a surge in calls for roof repairs. “People don’t realize they have real problems until you get an inch and a half to two inches of rain over a period of 24 hours,” Turner said.
Turner advises that homeowners address leaks promptly to avoid further issues like mold and structural damage. “The faster you move on, the better off you are,” he stated.
The museum is seeking community support to help fund the necessary repairs and preserve its historical artifacts. Donations can be made by clicking here.
As the museum works to address the damage and prevent future flooding, it calls on the community to help preserve a vital piece of local history. The ongoing rains highlight the importance of timely maintenance and community support in safeguarding cultural heritage.
