Operation Homefront benefits military families with school backpacks for kids

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Operation Homefront is holding its annual Back-to-School Brigade during which they will distribute 30,000 backpacks to military families nationwide. On Saturday, July 20, backpacks with essential school supplies will be distributed to 400 local military children.

According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, families in Colorado Springs with two children require two adults to work full-time for more than $30/hour. For military families, where the spouse unemployment rate remains above 20% and the service member’s income is capped by rank and time in service, buying kids back-to-school supplies can become an unmanageable burden.

Operation Homefront’s Back-to-School Brigade program has been going since 2008, and they expect to give out their 580,000th backpack this year. All told, they have saved families $60 million in back-to-school expenses and have ensured that military kids will have the necessary resources to succeed in the classroom.
