Outdoor Colorado: Ride up Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

(SPONSORED) — One of Colorado’s most iconic natural beauties is the awe-inspiring Pikes Peak, which sits at 14,115 feet. Hundreds of people visit the top of Pikes Peak for the undeniably incredible views.

There are multiple ways to get to the top of Pikes Peak: either a strenuous hike on the Barr Trail or the Crags Trail, driving up the Pikes Peak Highway toll road, or going up the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway.

The cog railway, which is named after the cogs on the train used to climb the mountain, takes you all the way up to the summit of Pikes Peak. A third rail that the cogs attach to enables the train to ride up smoothly.

The railway was established all the way back in 1889 during the age of steam. The railway was purchased by the owner of the Broadmoor Hotel, Spencer Penrose, in 1925 and has been run by the hotel ever since.

Although the railway no longer uses the same rails established in the late 1800s, the path of the modern-day Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway does follow the same path as the original.

One of the most breathtaking sights along the train ride is Inspiration Point. This is where American author and poet Katharine Lee Bates got the inspiration to write “America the Beautiful.”

Being able to see almost as far out as Kansas, this view has also inspired thousands of visitors just like Katharine Lee Bates.
