Outdoor Colorado: The Paint Mines

(SPONSORED) — When you’ve thought you’ve seen it all when it comes to rock formations in Colorado, think again! The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is a hidden gem in Calhan, Colorado, that makes you feel like you’re walking on another planet.

After you park and take a stroll over the hill, you’ll start to see the formations. There are four sets of them in the park, all connected by trails. As you get deeper into the park, you’ll start to see purples, golds, and oranges on the clays.

The color of the formations is due to how much iron has been deposited over the 55 million years that they’ve been around. The area they’re located in used to be a subtropical rainforest all those millions of years ago; now the area is mostly used for ranches.

You can even take guided hikes at the Paint Mines. There, you’ll get the whole story of where the formations came from and insight into the native people that first used this land, all from a hike guide.

There are only three more chances to go on this tour. They all take place on Saturday:
Sept. 27, Oct. 11, and Oct. 18. To register, you can visit their website here.

Overall, the park has 750 acres for you to explore. The address is: 29950 Paint Mine Road, Calhan, CO 80808.
