(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Amidst sadness, something beautiful blossomed: Fiona’s Cozy Little Library. Its cheerful yellow exterior and heart-shaped arrangement of rocks may initially catch the eye, but the true significance comes in the hope and love put into the creation by nine-year-old Fiona Turner.
“This is my little library that I made in memory of my dear friends Ellie and Aden,” said Fiona Turner.
In December, Fiona Turner, along with countless others, experienced deep sorrow when learning of the tragic loss of Ellie and Aden Wentz, who were allegedly killed by their mother.
In response to her close friend’s tragic loss, Turner began working on several projects to navigate her grief while also offering support to others in the community who were similarly affected.
“We made bracelets for lots of people,” Jasmin Guthrie, the mother of Fiona, said. “We bought lots of books to give to the affected classrooms in the library at school, and we made memory boxes, and it was just kind of like, what do we do next? That helps her mostly, but also her classmates and the other students at school who were impacted.”
Fiona Turner opens her little library, looking at all the books inside.
When it comes to reading, Turner is a bookworm, her passion for books was shared with Ellie, as they both were in a book club together, making the creation of the library a testament to their bond.
“I knew that Ellie liked to read books and I thought that Aden might like books as well,” Turner said. “So, I decided to make a little library in memory of them.”
The rainbow-painted rock, that Fiona Turner shared was the most special, reminded her of her dear friend Ellie Wentz.
The little library is decorated with flowers along with the names of Aden and Ellie, serving as a special tribute to the profound impact these two individuals had on so many
“It’s so bright, and it’s… you really can’t miss it when you drive by,” Guthrie said. “It’s really noticeable, but yeah, I mean Ellie was a big part of our lives before, and I think she always will be. “
Fiona looks out on the rocks painted by community members with different designs and messages to remember Ellie and Aden.
Nestled beside the library is a comforting bench, inviting visitors to a spot to read their special book. There also sits, in the shape of a heart, dozens of vibrant rocks, each inscribed with messages and designs crafted by members of the community.
“I would go into each individual classroom and paint rocks with classes, and I would bring them home and seal them up and collect them for Fiona so we could organize them to decorate the library,” Guthrie said. “In a way, the library is like Fiona’s piece, and then the rocks are Odyssey’s piece.”
Fiona and Jasmin embrace in a hug, helping support each other during this challenging time.
At a young age, Turner’s actions reveal the deep resilience she holds in navigating this traumatic experience and her ability to extend compassion to others who are suffering.
“She is only nine years old and she is doing things for this community that even adults can’t do,” Guthrie said. “The impact is going to be so profound.”
The grand opening of Fiona’s Cozy Little Library is set for March 23 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. to remember Ellie and Aden.
For those who wish to stop by, the grand opening of Fiona’s Cozy Little Library is set to take place on March 23 at 5034 Sweetgrass Lane in Colorado Springs.
“We’re having a little ceremony from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.,” Guthrie said. “Fiona is going to cut a little ribbon and officially open it. Then we’re planning on having bookmarks to color, rocks for people to paint so they can add their own rocks to the collection, some coloring sheets, and then, of course, we’re accepting book donations, if anyone would like to bring some.”
In this next chapter of life, Fiona’s Cozy Little Library stands as a true testament to friendship, showcasing the enduring love that continues, even in the unimaginable.
