Parents arrested after school alerts authorities to child abuse

(PUEBLO WEST, Colo.) — The parents of a 6-year-old child were arrested in Pueblo West on Thursday, March 6 after staff at the child’s school reported signs of abuse to authorities in October of 2024.

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), 27-year-old Ryson Ashley and his wife, 33-year-old Ashtan Ashley were arrested Thursday on charges of child abuse for knowingly or recklessly causing injury.

PCSO said the investigation began in October 2024 when officials at a Pueblo West elementary school reported visible signs of abuse on a 6-year-old child. PCSO said the child was taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries and placed with the Department of Human Services.

PCSO said an extensive investigation led to an arrest warrant being issued for Ryson and Ashtan Ashley, and they were arrested at a home in Pueblo West. Both have been booked into the Pueblo County Jail and are due in court on April 10.
