Peters sentenced to 9 years in prison

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – Former Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters was sentenced to up to nine years of incarceration Thursday for election violations.

Peters’ sentence is as follows:

Counts one and four: three and a half years in the Department of Corrections served concurrently.

Count two: three and a half years in the Department of Corrections.

Count six: 15 months in the Department of Corrections.

Count eight: 120 days in the Mesa County Detention Facility, served concurrently with counts nine and 10 following her prison sentence.

Counts nine and 10: six months in the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Peters will serve three years of parole following her sentence and pay up to $2,000 in fines for counts one, two, and four, the max fine for count eight and $1,000 for counts nine and 10.

On Aug. 12, Peters was found guilty of failure to comply with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office, three counts of attempting to influence a public servant and one of three counts of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation. She was acquitted on three counts: criminal impersonation, conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and identity theft.

Shortly after the sentence, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold released a statement:

“Tina Peters has been sentenced to nine years of incarceration for her dangerous attempts to break into her own election equipment to prove Trump’s ‘Big Lie.’ We will not allow anyone to threaten our elections.

“Colorado’s elections are the nation’s gold standard. I am proud of how we have responded to the first insider elections breach in the nation and look forward to another secure and successful election in November.”
