(COLORADO SPRINGS) — One of the biggest names in Colorado golf was at the Broadmoor on Wednesday, June 25, and gave FOX21 News an exclusive look at the U.S. Senior Open, as well as his prestigious title as honorary chair of the championship.
Hale Irwin, a Colorado native, is one of the few players in golf history to win three U.S Opens and the oldest to win the U.S. Open at age 45 in 1990. Irwin attended Boulder High School and went on to star at the University of Colorado where he twice was selected first-team All-Big Eight Conference as a defensive back in football and won the 1967 NCAA individual golf championship along with two Big Eight titles.
Irwin is this year’s honorary chair of the U.S Senior Open at the Broadmoor.
“The Broadmoor is special place for me, my wife Sally, and our family along with my great association with long-time director of golf Dow Finsterwald,” said Irwin. “It is revered in the history of professional and amateur golf with great champions… I know how much the region, especially the Colorado Springs and Denver communities, will support this championship but also appreciates this great game.”
FOX21 News sat down with Irwin and PGA Director of Golf Russ Miller ahead of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open Championship. You can watch the full interview in the video player above.
