DENVER (KDVR) — As the upcoming Wild Card playoff game draws closer, some fans are taking a trip down memory lane to the previous playoff runs for the Denver Broncos.
The team has reached the playoffs 22 times in its history, beginning in 1977. In fact, the team has had several multi-year playoff runs. This time, the Broncos reached the playoffs with a decisive 38-0 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Although not all games are represented, FOX31 looked into the past to see what previous Broncos playoff runs looked like.
Rules for football in the 1970s were different — players could fling opposition members, swing them through the air, or even trip them — as evidenced by historic photos of the events.
Perhaps you remember the 1986, 1987 and 1988 playoff runs when the Denver Broncos met the Cleveland Browns, back when Bernie Kosar was quarterback for the Ohio team. John Elway was also playing for the Broncos during those games.
Since then, the Broncos have had a few runs in the playoffs, including 2011 through 2015. Then began the Broncos playoff drought, which was broken this year. The team also played in the 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2005 playoffs, and in the Wild Card game, no less.

Unless Manning changes his habits, the Super Bowl-watching world will get to hear Omaha! again and again this Sunday. The Denver Broncos quarterbacks word choice at the line of scrimmage has cast a bright light on the Midwestern city over the past few weeks. Omaha has been mentioned thousands of times on Twitter and in media stories, and been visited by everyone from ESPN to the NFL Network. As the Broncos prepare to take on the Buffalo Bills Sunday in New York, they’ll have a storied history to draw from. The photos prove it.
