Pikes Peak United Way to offer free tax assistance

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Starting Tuesday, Jan. 21, appointments will be available for Pikes Peak United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to receive free help filing income taxes.

VITA is an IRS-sponsored program that provides free tax preparation for individuals and families earning household incomes of less than $64,000.

“This service is vital to so many hard-working individuals and families throughout Colorado,” said Cami Bremer, Pikes Peak United Way President and CEO. “As family budgets stretch to meet basic needs, support in navigating the complex tax code is a way we can support those who need it most. Our trained volunteers come alongside the community, simplifying a complicated and inconvenient process in a way that works for them.”

This year, VITA’s goal is to file 2,500 tax returns in 2025. In recent years, VITA efforts provided refunds of more than $4 million in state and local tax refunds. On average, returns processed through VITA are returned in 10-14 days.

Tax services are offered in person and are available to the public by appointment only. Pikes Peak United Wat offers a variety of daytime, evening, and weekend appointments.

Individuals can call 211 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the weekdays to schedule an appointment. Spots will be available until April 15, with February being the busiest month.
