(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Pueblo Police officers made a swift arrest after a man allegedly walked into a credit union in Pueblo on Thursday, July 31 and forced a teller to fill an envelope with cash.
According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), officers responded around 2:20 p.m. on July 31 to a report of an armed robbery at a credit union in the 2800 block of South Prairie Avenue, south of Lake Minnequa. The suspect had allegedly entered the credit union and approached a teller, placing a manila envelope on the counter and instructing the teller to “fill it up.”
PPD said the suspect warned the teller not to press any buttons or take any actions that could “escalate the situation.” The teller did as instructed, filling the envelope with cash, before the suspect drove off in a Buick Century. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect or the car.
Just over an hour later, around 3:38 p.m., officers patrolling on North Elizabeth Street on the north side of Pueblo spotted the car heading north. Officers utilized license plate readers through the Real-Time Crime Center to keep track of the car while additional officers responded.
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old J.E. Wroten, stopped at Drew Dix Parkway and got out of his car. PPD said Wroten initially complied with officers, but then attempted to run away. An officer caught Wroten, and he was arrested without further incident. Wroten’s car was towed pending a search warrant, and he was booked into the Pueblo County Jail on robbery charges.
PPD said Wroten remains in custody on a $15,000 bond.
