(COSTILLA COUNTY, Colo.) — A private prop plane made an emergency landing in a prairie in Costilla County on Thursday, Aug. 7, after losing engine power at 10,000 feet.
Costilla County Sheriff Danny Sanchez said he was the first on scene, as he was driving in the area when the plane landed around 9:15 a.m., Thursday morning. Sanchez said the Cirrus SR22 GTS had departed from Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a husband and wife aboard, as well as another man.
The engine reportedly lost power around 10,000 feet, and at 8,000 feet, the pilot deployed the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), which is a feature of the aircraft. The parachute helped the plane descend in the southwest part of Costilla County and eventually landed in a prairie off Blackhawk Road near the Rio Grande River.
Sheriff Sanchez said the husband and wife were taken to the hospital as a precaution, and the male passenger rode in the ambulance as a courtesy ride.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is responding to investigate the cause of the emergency landing and is en-route from Greeley, Sanchez said.
