Public memorial date set for creator of Bishop Castle

(RYE, Colo.) — A date has been set for a public memorial service in remembrance of Jim Bishop, the visionary behind one of Colorado’s most unique attractions.

James “Jim” Roland Bishop spent nearly 60 years constructing and designing the iconic castle off Highway 165 in Rye. The castle stands 16 stories high with winding spiral staircases, stained glass windows, and even a metal dragon that breathes fire.

Bishop passed away on Nov. 21, 2024, leaving a monumental legacy and cherished memories for all those who ever visited the castle or spent time talking to its builder.

A small memorial was held in December 2024, with a public memorial tentatively planned for summer 2025, so locals and visitors from near and far could gather at the iconic castle Bishop built, and remember his accomplishments and his unique story.

The public memorial is now set for Saturday, July 5, at Bishop Castle, 12705 State Highway 165, Rye, CO, 81069. A time will be announced at the event page linked above once it’s been decided.
