Pueblo Police officer wounded in shooting, 16-year-old suspect in custody

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A Pueblo Police Department (PPD) officer was injured during a shooting in the early morning hours of Monday, April 28.

At around 12:16 a.m., Pueblo Police received a report of a shooting and assault near Northern and Abriendo Avenues, near I-25. An officer responded to the scene, and technicians at Pueblo Police Real-Time Crime Center identified a car matching the description of the one involved in an assault at 4th Street and Glendale Avenue.

Officers were then dispatched to that location, where a passenger from the original report exited the car and hijacked another at gunpoint. An officer tried to stop the stolen car, and the suspect began firing at the officer, resulting in a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the officer.

The suspect, identified as a 16-year-old boy, was pursued by officers as he left the scene and exchanged more gunfire in the 4600 block of Thatcher Avenue, where officers were successful in stopping the car with a tactical intervention vehicle.

The 16-year-old suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and is in custody.

The 10th Judicial District Critical Response Team (CIRT) will conduct an investigation. Anyone who has information regarding the incident is asked to contact PPD at (719) 553-2502 or Crime Stoppers at 719-542-7867.
