Pueblo voters to decide future of utilities

(PUEBLO, Colo.)— There is less than a month until Pueblo voters will decide the future of utilities in the city.

In May, a question will appear on the ballot asking voters whether to terminate the City’s contract with Black Hills Energy. Black Hills Energy’s contract with the city is good until 2030, however, some have called for a termination of the contract so the city can move to a public utility.

“Ultimately, what voters are going to signal to our elected leadership is… we’d like you to continue to look for other alternatives and opportunities to save money,” said Andrew Hayes, the City of Pueblo’s Public works Director.

The vote will tell the city if community members would like an alternative, however the city recently released an impact study that determined if it started its own utilities, the cost would not be feasible.

“The City of Pueblo seems to think they’re going to ask those communities to pick up the multibillion dollar tab,” said a Black Hills Energy spokesperson.

The city has other alternatives to consider, like a joint jurisdiction utility or a co-op. The City said it is asking this question on the ballot to get ahead of the game on planning for other options.
