Pueblo Zoo welcomes baby De Brazza’s monkey

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Pueblo Zoo has an adorable new addition to their animal family. A baby De Brazza’s monkey was born to parents Ruby, a 10-year-old female, and Kanoa, a 13-year-old male on March 30.

The baby’s gender is still unknown, as it can be difficult to determine until it grows and gets some distance from the mom. The baby is doing well and will be joining the parents in the exhibit.

Ruby and Konoa have been a couple since the exhibit, which is part of a multi-year capital campaign that included the Safari Cafe, bathrooms, and the African painted dog exhibit, opened in 2018. De Brazza’s monkeys are an old-world species found in central Africa.

“We are beyond delighted about this birth. Since Ruby and Kanoa arrived, we have been dreaming of this day!” says Executive Director, Abbie Krause.

The Pueblo Zoo, as a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), participates in programs such as the Species Survival Plan (SSP), designed to oversee species populations. These initiatives enable zoos nationwide to effectively manage captive populations of De Brazza’s monkeys while preserving genetic diversity.
