Recall effort against Pueblo DA alleges malicious prosecution

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Several Pueblo residents are seeking signatures on a petition to recall 10th Judicial District Attorney (DA) Kala Beauvais, citing “malicious prosecution, civil rights abuses, and conflicts of interest,” while Beauvais argues the recall is in retaliation for her prosecuting the petitioners.

Pueblo’s first female DA told FOX21 News that Laura Hall, Beau Burnett, and Jessie Cortez are currently being prosecuted by the DA’s Office for various allegations. Hall and Burnett are claiming they have been targeted by the DA’s Office for years.

Hall was arrested during a No Kings protest in Pueblo in June, after she appeared to reach for a gun she had in a holster on her hip, which she said she was simply carrying and “exercising her rights.” She claims in the aftermath, her rights were violated by the DA’s Office and law enforcement. Burnett alleges he was charged and had his case dismissed only for it to be re-filed with “bogus charges.”

Beauvais said the recall is undermining the legal system and calls it “an abuse of our Democratic process.”

The petitioners’ claims are not only baseless, but retaliatory. The three individuals spearheading this recall petition, Laura Hall, Beau Burnett, and Jessie Cortez are currently being prosecuted by the DA’s office for menacing with a deadly weapon, assault, and motor vehicle theft, respectively.  Attempts like this to circumvent accountability and our criminal justice system by launching a recall petition based on misinformation and personal grievances present a danger to the community. It serves to undermine the integrity of our legal system and is nothing more than an abuse of our democratic process. This recall election is a clear attempt at revenge and would cost the taxpayers over $480,000.
