(FALCON, Colo.) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said on Wednesday, July 16, a Red-tailed Hawk was found with an injury to its right wing.
CPW’s Assistant Area Wildlife Manager, Travis Sauder, said on Wednesday morning, an individual saw what appeared to be an injured hawk in the Falcon area. The person was able to safely capture the hawk, put it in a crate, and CPW took it in for diagnosis.
They found the hawk had an injury to its right wing, but the injury does not appear to be severe. The hawk was given to a specialized rehabilitation specialist who will hopefully get the hawk back in the wild.
CPW said if you see an injured animal, contact CPW and, if possible, provide photos or video to assist CPW in assessing the situation.
“There’s a couple of steps that will take place. We want to assess, whether that’s by picture or video that you can send us. We’ll send a wildlife officer out, they can safely handle and capture that animal,” said Sauder. “Then, a lot of times, we’ll use volunteers to transport that to a specialized licensed rehabber. Depending on the age of the animal, depending on the injury, depends on how long they’ll keep it. Once they feel comfortable, we try to release it back in the same area it came from.”
