DENVER (KDVR) — Things aren’t looking so good for the Colorado Rockies at the moment. Off the back of the consecutive worst seasons in franchise history, the Rockies have started 2025 with the worst start in franchise history, going 3-15 and scoring less than three runs a game.
The slow offensive start led to the announcement posted on X on Thursday afternoon that the Rockies have relieved hitting coach Hensley Meulens of his duties, and are instating special assistant to the general manager and former manager, Clint Hurdle, to the hitting coach position for the remainder of the season.
The Rockies are the basement dwellers in all of the MLB, averaging only 2.89 runs a game, trailing the second-to-last team, the Chicago White Sox, who are scoring 3.0 runs a game.
The team’s best hitting performances on the season include a 12-5 victory over the Athletics, a 7-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers and a 7-8 loss on Wednesday night against the team’s rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Aside from those games, the Rockies have failed to eclipse five runs in a game in 15 of 18 games for the season, and had a three-game scoreless streak against the San Diego Padres, a record streak for the franchise.
The lack of scoring is not from a fear of trying, as the Rockies rank among the leaders in the MLB in swings, but also lead in whiffs and have hitting statistics, according to the MLB, including:

At the moment, the Rockies are projected to go 57-105 on the season, which would surpass the worst season in franchise history when they went 59-103 in 2023.
The newly appointed Hurdle was the Rockies manager from 2002-09 and oversaw the team during its lone World Series run in 2007.
The dismissed Meulens was the hitting coach since 2022 and previously won three World Series titles with the San Francisco Giants in the same position.
The Rockies start a three-game homestand against the Washington Nationals on Friday.
