Sand Creek’s Mangrum leads state with dad calling the plays

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Ethan Mangrum, a standout junior at Sand Creek, is leading the state in rushing yards and touchdowns, scoring 27 of them, as the key cog in a Scorpions offense with his father, Chris, calling the plays.

Second-year head coach Eric Mitchell made sure to bring Chris Mangrum with him from Falcon, as his offensive coordinator, where the two took over a Scorpions program that had just won three games in 2023.

Along, too, came a young Ethan, who’s played football under his father’s tutelage, since he first played the game they love in his second grade year.

Together, Mitchell and the Mangrum’s have revamped Sand Creek football to an entirely new level, leading the Scorpions to a perfect 8-0 record, thus far, in 2025.

(Ethan) Mangrum’s exceptional performance has been instrumental in the Scorpions’ success, as they are currently ranked 11th in the 4A division.

“I call him Superman,” Sand Creek quarterback Treven Rick said at Tuesday evening’s practice.

Rick reunited with the Mangrum’s, following Ethan for his junior season.

Aided by one of the top offensive lines in the state, the high-powered Sand Creek offense refuses to slow down.

On Friday, Mangrum made program history racing for a remarkable 99-yard touchdown, further cementing his status as a top player in the state.

The Scorpions continue to rewrite local records, driven by Mangrum’s performance and the team’s collective effort behind strong line play.
