School employee helps police capture attempted carjacking suspect in Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A school employee helped law enforcement stop a suspect who police said attempted to carjack several vehicles while being chased by detectives in Colorado Springs.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), the suspect, a minor, was being sought for his alleged involvement in a smash-and-grab on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at a business licensed to sell firearms in the 300 block of Main Street in Security-Widefield.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, detectives with CSPD’s Armed Violent Offenders unit obtained a search warrant for an apartment in the 1600 block of North Murray Boulevard near Palmer Park Boulevard, after identifying a suspect connected to the burglary.

At the apartment, another minor was taken into custody without incident after they were seen wearing clothes that matched what was seen in surveillance footage from the incident. Further investigation led detectives to uncover that the primary suspect associated with the apartment was attending school at the time.

When the suspect returned from a field trip, he was alerted by another student and ran from the school before trying to carjack multiple vehicles that were stopped on westbound Vickers Drive at the intersection with North Academy Boulevard.

CSPD said a school employee in the area, who followed detectives in an effort to help, was approached by the suspect, who got in their car and tried to drive away.

“The employee resisted, preventing the vehicle from being put into gear,” CSPD wrote. “Detectives quickly intervened, removed the suspect from the vehicle, and took him into custody without further incident.”

Police said the minor taken into custody at the apartment faces several charges, including Second-Degree Burglary, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Criminal Mischief. In addition to these charges, the minor who ran from detectives is also facing charges of Attempted Robbery and Kidnapping.

CSPD believes that there may be additional victims of these two minors and is asking anyone who may have been the victim of an attempted carjacking at the intersection of Vickers Dr. and North Academy Blvd., or other crimes in relation to this case, to contact CSPD at (719) 444-7000.

Police described the suspect who ran from detectives as a White/Hispanic male, about 5’7” with a slim build, weighing about 130 lbs., with short brown hair and brown eyes. The suspect was wearing a grey hoodie and baggy blue jeans.

CSPD said it continues to investigate a shooting tied to the smash-and-grab burglary that took place in east Colorado Springs near South Carefree Circle and North Murray Boulevard early Wednesday morning. During the shooting, a victim’s vehicle was shot at multiple times by the driver of a “dark colored boxy vehicle.”

Before the shooting, the victim had been following two suspicious vehicles after observing what appeared to be preparations for a burglary at a business near Maizeland Road and North Academy Boulevard.

One of the vehicles the victim was following, described as a dark sedan, was allegedly used during the smash-and-grab and was impounded. Detectives also recovered a third stolen vehicle used during the burglary on Oct. 16.
