WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — There is a last-minute effort to save TikTok just days before the popular app is set to be banned. A small group of senators is trying to extend the deadline for TikTok’s parent company to sell the app.
Right now, the TikTok ban is set to go into effect on Sunday unless lawmakers act to stop it.
Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduced legislation this week that would extend the deadline for parent company ByteDance to sell TikTok in 270 days.
“Time is our enemy right now. In four days TikTok goes dark. My bill just says, we need more time,” Markey said.
Markey calls TikTok an integral part of life for millions of Americans.
“It’s central to our economy and the way in which we communicate,” Markey said.
An overwhelming bipartisan majority of lawmakers supported the original law to force a sale of TikTok, arguing having the app owned by a Chinese company threatens U.S. national security.
Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) says he does not support the effort to extend the deadline.
“They had all the time in the world. Absolutely not,” Scott said. “They’ve had an opportunity to sell it to make sure the Chinese government doesn’t control it and they decided not to do that.”
Sen. Markey insists that lawmakers should take more time to find a better solution.
“We need hearings. We need to understand this issue better, so we can come to a better decision in this balance between national security and free speech and the role TikTok plays in our economy as well,” Markey said.
President-elect Donald Trump has also expressed a desire to keep TikTok around, but the ban is set to take place the day before he takes office, so it’s not clear he has the power to stop it.
The Supreme Court is currently weighing a challenge to the TikTok law and could issue their decision any day now.
