(COLORADO SPRINGS) — After a partial road collapse in North Cheyenne Cañon Park due to “significant washout” was reported on Wednesday, June 4, a popular trail in the area is now closed due to heavy rain and the potential of hazardous conditions.
Just after 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, June 5, the Pikes Peak Ranger District announced that the Seven Bridges Trail will be temporarily closed from the trailhead section of Gold Camp Road to the southeast corner of Jones Park.
“Officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid affected areas until conditions improve,” according to a press release by the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands (PSICC). “The affected area is currently being assessed, and updates will be regularly posted on the PSICC alerts page.”
The closure comes one day after a “significant road washout” closed two roads in North Cheyenne Cañon Park.
“We’ve had a significant amount of rainfall over the past few days, and that has created some erosion issues,” said Scott Abbott, Regional Parks, Trails and Open Space Manager for Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. “The creek is running at a very high rate and has eroded. We have about a third of the road missing at this point.”
The road collapse has closed both North Cheyenne Canyon and Gold Camp Roads to all vehicles and cyclists until further notice.
