(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced on Thursday, May 2, that Sinton Trail has opened on the south side of Ellston Street beneath I-25. It will stay open until late August but expect some periodic closures.
During closures, pedestrians should follow the detour signs or refer to the map for guidance, and they should always be aware of their surroundings near construction zones.
The following detour routes will be in effect during construction work and intermittent trail closure:
Bike/Pedestrian trail – alternate routes based on the direction you are coming from:
South along Chestnut Street: This route will cross I-25 at the Uintah Street interchange and reconnect to the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail using the grade-separated crossing on the north side of Uintah Street.
North along Chestnut Street: Go north to Garden of the Gods Road, and reconnect to the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail at the grade-separated trail crossing east of Pikeview Reservoir.
Garden of the Gods Road: Go south on Chestnut Street, then west on Holland Park Boulevard.
When moving through an active construction zone, CDOT recommends using the following safety tips:
Wear Reflective Clothing: Enhance your visibility to construction workers and machinery operators by donning bright, reflective attire. Steer clear of dark or earth-tone colors that blend into the surroundings and are difficult to spot.
Use a Helmet: If you’re biking through the construction zone, always wear a helmet.
Carry Safety Gear: Equip yourself with necessary safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection, to shield against dust and debris.
Keep Earbuds Out: Refrain from wearing earbuds or headphones. Keeping your ears free enables you to remain attentive to warning sounds and construction activity around you.
Follow Posted Signs: Pay heed to and adhere to all posted signs and instructions. They are designed to safely guide you through the construction area.
Watch for Uneven Surfaces: Exercise caution around uneven surfaces, holes, or loose gravel. These hazards can be particularly perilous for cyclists or pedestrians.
Avoid Distractions: Maintain focus on your surroundings and refrain from using mobile devices while traversing the construction zone.
Use Designated Paths: Stick to designated pathways or detours established for trail users. Venturing into unauthorized areas can pose hazards.
Communicate with Workers: If uncertain, seek directions or clarification from construction workers on how to navigate the area safely.
