DENVER (KDVR) — A skier died Thursday morning at Keystone Ski Resort after hitting a tree on the Flying Dutchman Trail.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at about 9:45 a.m. on the Dercum Mountain. The 58-year-old man was wearing a helmet at the time of impact, according to the sheriff’s office.
No other skiers or riders were involved, although another skier witnessed the crash.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by the tragic loss of life at Keystone Ski Resort,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in a release. “We are actively investigating the incident and working closely with resort officials to ensure the safety of all visitors to our community’s beloved slopes.”
The crash is still under investigation. The skier will be identified by the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder for skiers and riders to “practice safe snow activity habits” and be aware of all associated risks. The office also asked that skiers and riders know about the Colorado Skier Safety Act and the Your Responsibility Code, which are designed to protect everyone on the slopes.
This is far from Colorado’s first ski death this season. Earlier this month, a 14-year-old died at Keystone Resort on a beginner trail on Dercum Mountain.
Dercum Mountain is at 11,640 feet, with long, groomed beginner slopes and rolling intermediate runs, according to the resort. Keystone reported receiving around 8 inches of snow during Thursday’s intense snowstorm.
