Smoke visible from prescribed burn at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — Fort Carson tells FOX21 News that the smoke visible around Colorado Springs on Friday, March 1 is coming from a prescribed burn and has crews on hand to manage the fire.

A Fort Carson spokesperson said on Friday at 9:30 a.m. the Fort Carson Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Department started a burn that will include about 1,000 acres.

“It will connect the recent range fires with previous burn areas, reduce future wildland fire fuel, and create a good buffer for regularly used training areas,” said a Fort Carson spokesperson.

According to Fort Carson, its fire department has committed five units to manage the burn along with two mutual aid units from Stratmoor Hills Fire Department and Security Fire Department.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) wrote it is aware of the fires but has not been called to assist at this time. Fort Carson said the burns are expected to be complete no later than 2 p.m. on Friday.
