(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — A fairly quick-moving system moved through the region Thursday evening, Feb. 20, before wrapping up early Friday morning, and this storm system ended up packing quite the punch for a few different areas.
Reports varied widely due to the upslope nature of the storm. Reports reflected in the graphics below came from CoCoRaHS, a weather reporting platform that members of the community can use in their very own backyard.
The classic “donut hole” snow total feature, which the Pikes Peak Region is well-known for, made an appearance across the area. This “donut hole” feature typically has characteristics of a tight snow total gradient from the Springs through Monument, Black Forest, and Woodland Park.
The unique elevation difference that spans the region is one of the main culprits for the wide range of totals. Higher elevation is usually correlated with higher totals. This time around, it looks like the Pikes Peak Region generally observed a range of a trace all the way up to 9 inches in isolated spots near Monument.
Rory U from Briargate sent this photo into Chief Meteorologist Matt Meister Friday morning. They said they got roughly four inches of snow in the Briargate area and the snowflakes were ‘big and fluffy’.
South of the Pikes Peak Region, snow totals dropped off drastically. Pueblo West and the surrounding area saw roughly one to two inches of snow with isolated higher amounts. Along Highway 50, reports of a trace (up to an inch) were common. Folks in Cheyenne and Kiowa Counties reported slightly higher amounts as the system exited the state early Friday morning.
Dennis A, in Florissant, reported 4 inches of snow Friday morning. He also sent in the above photo to Matt Meister. Portions of Teller county generally received a good 5 to 6 inches of snow with slight variations here and there.
Fremont County, specifically Cañon City, featured here, were less lucky when it came to accumulations. David F sent this photo into Matt Meister Friday morning and said that they measured less than an inch.
