(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A structural report on Jenkins Middle School has been completed and made available to the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) as part of an ongoing safety improvement plan following the closure of the school on Jan. 17.
Students began the Spring semester at either Doherty High School or Russell Middle School while Jenkins is being inspected for improvements. The school was closed due to fire safety and structural concerns.
According to a press release from D11, a local fire protection consulting company has submitted its structural engineering report and shared it with CSFD. D11 said the report assesses structural conditions and identifies areas that need to be repaired, removed, or replaced before students can safely return.
“Our top priority is ensuring that our students have a safe and stable learning environment, and this report is an important step in determining what must be done to make that possible at Jenkins Middle School,” said Superintendent Michael Gaal. “While the findings confirm the challenges we anticipated, we are moving swiftly and strategically to assess next steps. [Monday’s] walkthrough with construction firms is a critical part of that process, and we will continue working urgently to determine a clear path forward.”
D11 said it is actively engaging with construction firms through a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process and plans to make a selection and confirm a construction company by Friday, Feb. 7. D11 said it would continue communicating with Jenkins families and keep them informed on the process.
“I want to personally thank our Jenkins students, families, and staff for their patience and resilience during this transition. We will keep you informed every step of the way as we work toward a long-term solution that supports our students’ success,” said Superintendent Gaal.
