CENTENNIAL, Colo. (KDVR) — Several wildfires are burning along Colorado’s Front Range, and they’re getting assists from all over the country — including the unique “Super Scooper” planes from Bridger Aerospace.
These aircraft arrived in Colorado Thursday and were initially helping the fight against the Quarry Fire in Jefferson County but has since been deployed to the fires north in Boulder and Larimer counties.
When FOX31 got to tour one of the planes and talk to a crew, it was stationed in Centennial. But when they’re not working they’re based out of Bozeman, Montana, where they can respond quickly to fires across the U.S. and Canada.
“We are always trying to fly, always trying to get those fires out,” scooper mechanic Derek Messner said.

Super Scooper can pull 1,400 gallons in 10 seconds
Crews were able to use these planes to grab water from a nearby reservoir, making a trip in about 6 minutes. A full refill of 1,400 gallons of water can be completed in just 10 seconds.
“One of the big surprises is always the scoops, how the aircraft picks up the water. Our scoops, our probes, are about the size of an iPhone, maybe a little bit smaller,” Messner said.

During flights, the crew is in constant communication with those on the front lines.
“We work with what’s called an air attack and that’s a very experienced firefighter who is circling above the fire at about 2,500 feet. And he’s in contact with the men and women on the ground and they’re telling us what priority to drop on. So, with this plane, we drop directly on the flames,” pilot Ryan Cleveland said.
It’s an effort that may not fully put out the flames but is instrumental in getting them under control.
If you see them at your local reservoir, it is best to steer clear, because getting too close can be hazardous.
